Who ate all the pies?!

23 January 2018

Oops, we did. We love pies! Meat pie, fruit pie you name it, we’ll try it!

Today is national Pie Day so why not have a change from beans on toast and have a go at making your own pie. To cover all bases we’ve found some tasty and cheap recipes for a meat pie, vegetarian pie and a nice sweet pie too! If you haven’t already we advise that you invest in a pie tin which you can use for all these recipes. You can get pie tins from most supermarkets but you can also find a selection on Amazon for around £6.00.

Fruit Pie

We’ve gone for the traditional Apple Pie because you just can’t beat it, especially with a dollop of custard on top! We’ve found this recipe which will take 30 minutes to prepare with a short list of ingredients, however please give yourself more time if you are new to this! You can be as creative as you like with the top pastry as you can have a go at doing the lattice like shown in the picture. You don’t need to worry about making the pastry as all pastry can be bought premade from the supermarket!

Meat Pie

Our favourite meat pie has got to be Steak and Ale and we’ve picked a Hairy Bikers recipe for this one as they always have great flavours and are easy to make. This a great winter warmer and perfect comfort food to help you through your exams and keep you feeling full! For meat pies you can use shortcrust or puff pastry, but for this recipe we’ve gone for puff pastry as suggested. You can also change the ingredients depending on what you do and don’t like.

Find the recipe here along with a video tutorial

Vegetarian Pie

The vegetarian pie we’ve chosen is Roasted Veg and Halloumi and is full of goodness and looks amazing!  You are probably better off using a deeper pie tin/pot for this so you can get lots of filling in it. This one uses filo pastry and should only take around 25 minutes to prepare. If you’re not a fan of halloumi, you could try using feta or goat’s cheese.

We hope we’ve made your mouth water and inspired you to get your apron on and get the pie tin out, however if you don’t feel up to making your own pie, there are plenty of delicious premade freezer or fresh pies to choose from at shops like Aldi or Lidl.

Happy Cooking and don’t forget the oven gloves!
