A checklist of what to bring to university

What to take to university - Derwent Students

So you’re going to University – Congratulations!  Now… what on earth do you need to pack?  Take a look below at our recommended essentials.

Remember, your university town or city will have plenty of shops you can buy this from, so you don’t have to bring all this from home!



  • Duvet (ideally one with different warmth layers that can be put together that’s ideal for both summer and winter)
  • 2 x bottom sheets
  • 2 x quilt covers (one to be put on whilst your washing the other)
  • 2 x pillows
  • A warm blanket, fleecy throw



  • 2 x Bath towels
  • 2 x hand towels
  • A dressing robe
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Facial wash
  • Moisturiser
  • Lip balm
  • Hair brush / comb
  • Shampoo / soap / shower gel
  • Spare pair of glasses
  • Shaving equipment (razors / cream)
  • Make up & remover
  • Contraceptives / condoms
  • Painkillers
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Cold/flu remedy
  • Throat lozenges
  • Tweezers
  • Plasters
  • Nail scissors



  • Casserole or similar dish
  • Frying pan
  • Wok
  • A large & a small saucepan, ideally with lid
  • A flat baking tray – perfect for chips!
  • Cheese grater
  • Bottle opener
  • Tin opener
  • Corkscrew (essential!)
  • Potato masher
  • Microwave suitable bowl
  • Measuring jug
  • Pizza cutter (or a good pair of scissors – really)
  • Chopping knives
  • 2 x Chopping board (one for meat and one for veggies)
  • Tea towels
  • Colander


Storage-y stuff

  • Tupperware – you know, those plastic tubs your parents use to store leftovers?
  • Sandwich bags
  • A biscuit tin
  • Cling film
  • Tin foil
  • A reusable water bottle



  • Glasses – ideally pint, wine, shot & cocktail if you want to get fancy!
  • Cutlery (knives, forks & spoons) you can manage with just 1 or 2 but just make sure you have enough if you have friends over!
  • Plates
  • Bowls
  • Mugs


Electrical stuff

  • Your laptop
  • Mobile phone
  • Chargers (a spare if you have one)
  • Headphones
  • A printer (and paper)
  • Memory sticks
  • Alarm clock
  • Extension leads
  • Plug converter (if you are an international student)



  • Your usual casual clothes i.e. jeans, t-shirts, shorts
  • Lightweight jumpers & cardigans
  • Heavyweight snuggly winter jumpers / cardigan
  • Hoodie
  • Onesie
  • Plenty of underwear and socks
  • Waterproof shoes
  • Trainers
  • ‘going out’ clothes
  • Winter wear – hat, scarf, gloves!
  • Rain coat – ideally the thin type you can stuff in your bag
  • Nightwear & slippers
  • Something suitable for a job interview
  • Swimwear
  • Gym gear
  • Warm jogging pants



  • Washing powder & fabric softener (get this when you arrive)
  • Laundry bag
  • Small drying rack
  • Washing up liquid
  • Scourer/sponge



  • Passport
  • Driving licence
  • National Insurance number
  • NHS medical card & vaccination history
  • Your health insurance details (for international students)
  • Letters of confirmation of scholarship or bursary (if applicable)
  • Any info from the Student Loans Company, Student Finance
  • Your unconditional offer from the University
  • Bank debit card & bank details
