Over the years we have compiled a list of useful information which may help you during your stay with Derwent Living.
Where is the…?
Police Station? Go to the small square the other side of the Voodoo pub. There, go to the far side and walk along the road (Southfields Road). You will see a large multi-storey car park, and opposite it is the turn-in to the police station. Next door to the police station is the council offices.
Post Office? Next to The Office Pub.
Town Centre/Market Place? Come out of Forest Court and turn left, and just keep walking. There you will find all the main banks and shops and a shopping mall called Carillon Court, situated on the left hand side of the main market
University? Come out of Forest Court, turn right and go up to the roundabout. Turn right again and it is on the left-hand side.
Cinema? Towards the town centre on the right-hand side. (Called the Curzon.) A little bit further on is the Town Hall, which occasionally acts as a theatre.
Railway station? Go into the town centre and take the road, that leads straight in front of it to the right of MacDonalds. Keep walking along there for about 10 minutes. About five minutes along that road is the parcel collection office for Royal Mail on the left-hand side. It is about 150 metres past the Ferrari garage.
Where can I buy bedding? The best place is probably Rosebys, which is in Carillon Court on the right-hand side. There are also a couple of shops down Market Street. When you get to the town hall turn left. Walk down there and on the right-hand side, there are several shops which deal in all sorts of things.
When is the market? On Thursdays and Saturdays.
Nearest supermarket? Somerfields is best if walking. Turn left opposite the town hall and it is about four doors down on the left-hand side. If in the car, there is a choice of three out-of-towners. Safeway is right out of Forest Court, right at the roundabout, then over three roundabouts into a little residential estate called Thorpe Acre. It about 150 metres after the third roundabout and the sign says Gorse Covert Shopping Centre. Sainsbury is closest car-wise. Turn left out of Forest Court, left at the lights, then keep going, following the road round to the right. It is opposite you then, but car access is left at the next traffic lights, and then turn into it. Tesco is turn right out of Forest Court, left at the roundabout, over the next one and right at the next one. About 50 metres on there is the right hand turn into Tesco.
When do I have to pay my rent? The University delivers a statement once a term generally about three weeks into the term, for it to be paid by the end of the following week or they receive a 10% surcharge.
