Rent advice

Are you struggling to pay your rent?

If you don’t pay your rent charges you will be in rent arrears.

We understand that during your time living with Derwent Students accommodation you may have money difficulties and be unable to pay your full rent charges by the due date.

If this happens please contact your Scheme Manager to discuss your circumstances straight away so that they may help you & you must also let your guarantor know that you are experiencing problems.

We do not want to take legal action against anyone but the more serious your debt becomes the more likely it is we will raise re-possession proceedings at Court & make you & your guarantor  responsible for payment of the debt along with extra costs & charges.

Things you can do to avoid getting behind with your rent

  • Contact us straight away if you are finding it a problem to your rent
  • Make your guarantor aware of your situation as they are jointly liable for payment of your rent
  • Contact the Welfare department at your University as they may be able to help.

If you don’t pay your rent we will

  • Write to you & your guarantor to confirm the debt, methods of payment, & future actions to recover the outstanding arrears
  • Visit you at the accommoation to request your payment
  • Write to you & your guarantor again & pass your details to our debt co-ordinator
  • If we cannot contact you or you do not pay your rent we will take further action which may mean you will lose your accommodation & be responsible for paymetn as ordered by court

Remember, our staff are here to help so if you do anticipate financial difficulties let them know before your rent is due as they may be able to help.
