We understand that you may have a lot of questions before moving into your new room.
Below is a list of FAQ's to help answer any questions you may have.

How close is the university?
De Montfort University is opposite Newarke Street Student Accommodation. The DMU Student Union is just under a 5 minute walk and The University of Leicester is around 25 minute walk.
How far is the city centre?
The Highcross Shopping Centre is around 10 minute walk. Belvoir Street is 5 minute walk where there are a variety of different bars and restaurants. The Curve Theatre is 13 minutes away. Leicester train station and St Margaret’s Bus Station are both 15 minutes’ walk away from site.
Where is the nearest supermarket?
Tesco Supermarket is only 10 minutes away but there is also a Tesco Express and Spar 5 minutes away.
Is there a medical centre nearby?
De Montfort Clinic Surgery just off Mill Lane, 5 minutes away. Walnut Street Medical Centre based on Walnut Street 15 minutes away.
Where is the nearest cashpoint?
At the Tesco Express 5 minutes away or on the way to The Student Union also 5 minutes away.
Where is the nearest police station?
Ladywood Police Station is a 10 minute walk away.
Where is the nearest post office?
Based inside the Highcross Shopping Centre, around 10 minute walk away.
Where is the nearest gym?
Upperton Road is free for residents to use and is under 15 minute walk or “The Gym” which is also 15 minutes away on Causeway Lane.
How far are the bus/train stations?
Leicester train station and St Margaret’s Bus Station are both 15 minutes’ walk away from site.
Where's the nearest bus stop?
On Welford Road or Oxford Street.
What's in my room?
Your room is fully furnished with: bed, desk, desk chair, wardrobe, en-suite bathroom.
What is included in the kitchen?
Kitchens come equipped with: two or four ring electric hob, full size oven, and small fridge with freezer compartment. You will need to provide your own crockery and cooking utensils. Starter packs are available to pre-order before you arrive - see our homepage.
Who cleans my flat?
You are responsible for cleaning your room.
Can I bring a pet?
Sorry, pets are not permitted on any Derwent Students properties.
Where can I do my laundry?
There is a washer/dryer in your flat
Can I personalise my room?
A metal magnetic board is provided in the bedroom for posters. We ask that you don't put posters on your walls as any damage caused will be chargeable.
Can I have guests to stay?
Guests are permitted for a maximum of 2 nights in any week. Please sign them in at reception on arrival.
Can I bring my car?
There are no car parking spaces available for residents, so you will have to use the pay and display spaces on the street or find an alternative longer term car park. The phoenix car park behind Newarke Street accommodation has 470 spaces and are able to park and pay or NCP Car Park Leicester at St Nicholas Circle which is 10 minutes’ walk away.
Is there anywhere I can store my bike?
There is a bike rails on site which is free to use.
Where do I collect my post from?
Mail is dropped into individual post boxes in the entrance to the building, but parcels can be collected from our onsite office.
How do I report maintenance issues?
You can email, phone or drop a repair request form off in reception. You can also ring the out of hour’s service number during office closing times.
Can I change my room?
Depending on availability and circumstances room changes can be arranged.
Do I need to have a TV Licence?
You will need to purchase a TV licence if you wish to watch or stream live TV in your flat.
What events do you arrange on the site?
We welcome suggestions from residents and are looking to hold a Christmas event at Upperton Road for this year’s residents staying during that period!
What facilities are there on site?
There are no common rooms on site, however all residents are able to use the Upperton Road gym and common area with large comfy sofas, pool tables and table tennis, a large TV and study room all for free.
Can I store my possessions in the summer?
If you are staying with us for the next academic year you are able to store your belongings in the same room. If changing rooms you are able to leave non valuable items in 3 medium sized boxes only in your new room.
Can I book for summer?
This depends on availability. If we are fully booked, current students can extend their stay for a week, or new residents can arrive a week early.
Can I arrive early?
If there are rooms available we can sometimes arrange early arrivals. Additional rent fees will apply - please see the team/sulets for more information.
What about safety and security on site?
We have CCTV on site, and there is a fob entry system for buildings and code padlock for other gates. Only residents and staff have access to the building.
